Emil Nolde
November 15 to December 6, 2024
Opening Reception: November 14, 5–7 pm
Our exhibition of prints Emil Nolde Werke 1906-1922 is dedicated to the particularly intensive creative phase of the important Expressionist.
It was during this period that most of Nolde's printmaking oeuvre was created.
Equally adept at woodcuts, lithographs and etchings and keen to experiment like no other artist of his time, Nolde delivers a graphic work on an equal footing with the paintings, watercolours and drawings.
Nolde explored all the technical possibilities of etching in order to achieve painterly and nuanced effects, he created masterpieces in woodcuts and used various exotic and sometimes coloured papers to perfect them, he varied the colour combinations of his lithographs so thoroughly that in the total edition of a sheet hardly one print was like the other.
The individuality of each individual print determines his work, not the duplication of the prints.
This individual approach to prints makes Nolde the outstanding artist in this medium.

Line and tonal etching. 1918.
Schiefler/Mosel R 195 II

PROPHET
Woodcut. 1912.
Schiefler/Mosel H 110
Signed in pencil Emil Nolde lower right, titled by Ada Nolde "Prophet" in the middle of the lower margin. With several stamps from Stadtmuseum Dresden on the verso. On handmade greenish laid paper, watermarked tulip in circle.
Superb, rich, hand-printed impression with a strong relief on the verso. Especially in the corners, the black parts are effectively lightened and allow the pattern of the wood grain to show through. In the light areas on the cheeks and forehead, the surface of the woodblock is visable in the printing, creating a striking interplay between light and dark and a relief-like structure.
